Clothes and other vacation essentials are back into a suitcase and about to be closed in

Planning a vacation is exciting—but packing? Not always so much. Whether you're heading to a tropical beach, setting sail on a cruise, or jetting off to a city abroad, packing smart can make all the difference. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you're prepared, organized, and ready to relax. You can learn to pack like a pro.

1. Start with a Packing List

Before anything goes in your suitcase, make a list. Think about:

  • Weather at your destination

  • Planned activities (swimming, hiking, dining out, etc.)

  • Travel documents and essentials (passport, ID, chargers)

  • Toiletries and medications

Checking items off as you pack helps avoid the last-minute scramble and reduces the risk of forgetting something important.

2. Pack by Outfit, Not by Item

Rather than throwing in a bunch of shirts and shorts, plan outfits. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Neutral colors and layers are your best friends. Bonus tip: pack one extra outfit in your carry-on, just in case your luggage is delayed.

3. Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes not only saves space, but it also helps minimize wrinkles. Use packing cubes or zip-top bags to keep things tidy and categorized.

4. Limit Shoes and Bulky Items

Shoes take up a lot of space. Try to limit yourself to three pairs: casual, dressy, and activity-specific (like hiking or flip-flops). Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane to free up room in your luggage.

5. Know the Rules for Carry-On Items

If flying, make sure liquids in your carry-on follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 oz containers or smaller, all fitting in a 1-quart clear zip-top bag. And remember—sharp objects, large liquids, and certain batteries may need to go in checked baggage.

6. Pack a Travel Day Essentials Bag

In a small pouch or backpack, include:

  • Travel documents

  • Headphones

  • Snacks

  • Reusable water bottle (empty until after security)

  • Wipes and hand sanitizer

  • Entertainment (book, tablet, etc.)

This keeps you comfortable and stress-free during your travel day.

7. Leave Room for Souvenirs

Planning on shopping or bringing gifts home? Leave space in your suitcase or pack a foldable tote bag just in case.

Final Tip: Don't overthink it. It doesn't have to be hard to pack like a pro. Most destinations have stores where you can buy forgotten items. Packing well is about being prepared but flexible. You’re going on vacation—enjoy it!
